In this section, we are going to break new grounds, using CorelDraw Graphic Design Text tool for adding and editing text.

CorelDraw Graphic Design Software is enhanced with powerful text-handling capability. CorelDraw allows you to apply both special effects and sophisticated word-processing features to graphic design text.

With the Text tool you can create Artistic Graphic Design text for short lines of text to which you can apply graphical effects, or Paragraph text for larger bodies of text with greater formatting requirements.

Adding Artistic Graphic Design Text to your Graphic Design

Artistic texts are short lines of text that you add to your document, especially if you plan to work with special effects. Artistic text can be manipulated like other graphic objects.

To add Artistic Graphic Design Text

Click the Text tool.

Click anywhere in the Drawing Window and type.

Adding Paragraph Text to your CorelDraw Graphic Design

It is important to use Paragraph text when you are adding a large amount of text to your graphic design; you need to draw a text frame.

To add Paragraph Text

Click the Text tool.

Click anywhere in the Drawing Window and drag diagonally from the initial point to form a box.

Type your text inside the box which is the text frame.

To select specific text with the Text tool

Select the Text tool

Click at the beginning or end of a word or sentence

Drag the cursor across the text you want to select.

When you select a text object with the Pick tool, you can move, scale, mirror, rotate, skew and apply formatting changes to it.

To select text with the Pick tool

Using the pick tool click on the text you want to select.

Specifying Font Size & Type Face

The easiest way to specify the font, type, and size of Graphic Design text is through the Property Bar.

To specify text properties

Select the text

Using the Property Bar

–       Choose a font type from the Fonts list box

–       Choose a value, or type a value in the Font Size list box

–       Click the (B) Bold button to bolden text

–       Click the (I) Italic button to italicize text

Adding and Modifying Underline, overline and Strikethrough Text Formats

You can apply underlines, overline, strikethrough and change any of the line styles through the Format Text dialog box. You can also use the Property Bar or the Text toolbar to underline text quickly.

To underline using the Property Bar

Select the Text

Click the Underline button on the Property Bar

To overline and strikethrough

Select the text

Click the Text Menu, Character Formatting (Corel X4) or Text Properties (Corel X7) to display the text formatting window

Click the Character Effects.

Do one or all of the following;

–       Choose a line style from the overline list box

–       Choose a line style from the Strikethrough list box.

Specifying Character, Word, and Line using the Shape Tool

You can adjust the amount of space before and after text characters, words and lines of text, using the Shape tool. When you adjust spacing with the Shape tool, the size of the Paragraph text frames remains the same.

To adjust character spacing using the Shape tool

Open the Shape Edit flyout, and click the Shape tool

Select the text either a line of Artistic text or a Paragraph text frame with the Shape tool.

Drag the Interactive Horizontal Spacing arrow to the right to increase, or to the left to decrease, the spacing between all characters in the text string.

To adjust spacing between words using the Shape tool

Open the Shape Edit flyout, and click the Shape tool

Select the text, either a line of Artistic text or a Paragraph text frame with the Shape tool.

Hold down the SHIFT key and drag the Interactive Horizontal Spacing Arrow to the right to increase, to the left to decrease the spacing between all words in the text string.

To adjust spacing between lines using the Shape tool

Open the Shape Edit flyout, and click the Shape tool

Select the text, either lines of Artistic graphic design text or a Paragraph text frame with the Shape tool.

Drag the Interactive Vertical Spacing arrow down to increase, or up to decrease the spacing between lines of characters.

Fitting Artistic Graphic Design Text to Path directly

The easiest way to place Artistic text along a curve of a graphic object is to type directly along the object’s path.

To fit text to a path directly

Click the Text tool

Position the Cursor near the object.

When the cursor changes to an insertion point cursor, click on the object.

Type the text along the object’s path

Fitting Artistic Graphic Text to a Closed Path

In CorelDraw Graphic Design, if you need to specify values such as the distance between text and objects or change the placement of text along the object, you might find it useful to use the Fit Text to Path command in combination with the Property Bar to fit text to a path and customize its appearance at the same time.

To Fit text to a closed Path

Using the Pick tool, select the Object & the Text together

Open the Text Menu, Click Fit Text to Path

On the Property Bar, adjust the Distance from path, Horizontal offset and the Vertical and Horizontal Mirror.
