In our previous lesson, we showed you how to adjust your graphics design fills and outline. In this lesson, we are going to show you how to select and transform your graphics design objects to get your desired arrangement.

To edit a graphics design object in CorelDraw, you must first select the object. An object remains selected until you select another object, click a blank space in the drawing window, or press the ESC key. The quickest way to select a graphics design object is by clicking on it using the Pick tool. You can also select an object using the keyboard or dragging the marquee selection box around the graphics design object(s).

Selecting your Graphics Design Objects by Clicking

Clicking on an object with the Pick tool is the quickest way to select a single object. You can also select a group of objects just as a single object. Several objects can also be selected by holding down the SHIFT key as you click on each of the objects, groups, and multiple groups of objects.

Selecting Graphics Design Objects by Dragging the Mouse

The easiest way to select multiple objects in your drawing is to drag the outline that appears when you click and drag the mouse in the Drawing Window with the Pick tool. This outline is called a marquee box; drag the mouse diagonally until the marquee box encloses all objects.

Moving Graphics Design Objects Interactively

By dragging an object, you can place it at a new location quickly while viewing the movements you make on the screen.

To Move an object interactively

Select the object with the Pick tool.

Drag the object to a new place in your drawing

Moving Graphics Design objects in Increments

The arrow keys on the keyboard allow you to move an object in any direction. By default, objects moves in 0.1 inch increments.

To nudge an object

Select the object with the Pick tool

Press the Arrow key towards the direction you want to move the object to.

Sizing Objects Using the Mouse

The easiest way to size objects is to drag the corner handles of the selection box with the mouse.

To size an object using the mouse.

Select the object with the Pick tool.
Drag one of the four corners selection handles inward to reduce, and outward to increase its size.

Stretching Graphics Design Objects Using the Mouse

When you stretch an object, you are resizing the horizontal and vertical dimensions of an object none proportionally.

To stretch an object horizontally or vertically using the Pick tool.

Select the object with the Pick tool,

Drag one of the sides selection handles inward to reduce, outward to increase.

Scaling Graphics Design Objects

You can increase the size of an object in increments or percentage.

To Scale an object in increments

Select the object with the pick tool

Drag one of the four corners selection handles. And check the status bar for the percentage display release when the desired percentage is gotten, or type in a percentage value into the scale factor column on the property bar. To scale by 100% simply hold the CTRL key while dragging.

Rotating Graphics Design Objects Using the Mouse

You can rotate an object interactively by dragging its rotation handles.

To rotate an object using the mouse

Double-click the object with the pick tool.

Note that each of the four corners selection handles changes to a double-edge curve these are the rotational handles.

Drag one of these rotational handles in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction to rotate.

Setting the Center of Rotation of a Graphics Design Objects

When you rotate an object, it revolves around its center by default. You can move an object’s center of rotation anywhere in the Drawing Window.

To set an object center of rotation.

Double-click the object with the pick tool.

Note that each of the four corners selection handles changes to a double-edge curve, which are the rotational handles. A circle appear at the middle, the circle is the object’s center of rotation.

Move the circle to any place in the drawing window

The position of the circle automatically becomes the object center of rotation.

Move any of the rotational handles to rotate.

Clearing Transformations

You can reverse all transformations applied to an object or group of objects.

To clear transformations applied to an object

Select the object(s) with the Pick tool.

Click Arrange, Clear Transformations.
